with blue cheese and walnuts

This roasted pear and cabbage with blue cheese and walnuts is a delicious and pretty side dish that compliments any roast. It has just the right amount of fruity sweetness from the pears, crunchiness from the walnuts and cabbage, as well as savory creaminess from the blue cheese.

I really love it when you can create an awesome dish from just a few fresh ingredients without too much fuss. This is one of those side dishes that really comes together in a jiffy, tastes delicious and is visually very pleasing.

I served this with roast chicken and a fresh garden salad for a Sunday afternoon family lunch.

I usually like my baked fruit served with a helping of ice-cream or fresh yogurt, but I sort of figured it might be fun to combine them with a more savory taste: blue cheese and cabbage.

What do I need to make this roasted pear and cabbage side?

You will need:

  • Fresh ripe pears
  • Savoy cabbage
  • Blue cheese ( I used Fairway”s Blue Rock which I bought from Woolworths)
  • Walnuts
  • Lemon juice
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • Fresh herbs to garnish with

How do I make this roast pear and cabbage side?

  1. Cut the savoy cabbage length-wise and place it on a roasting tray. Drizzle with olive oil and roast for 20 minutes in an oven that has been pre-heated to 200° C
  2. Add the pears, sprinkle everything with salt and pepper then roast for another 20 minutes.
  3. Once the pears are caramelized and the cabbage is soft, remove from the oven and drizzle with lemon juice.
  4. Top with the blue cheese and walnuts and garnish with fresh herbs like thyme just before serving.
